Learning to swim as an adult can be a daunting experience. That’s why it’s so important to arrive at your first adult swimming lesson properly prepared. There are the obvious essentials such as swimwear, goggles, a swim cap that most will bring automatically, but there are some other useful objects that will make your first lesson go swimmingly. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of the top 10 things you need for your first adult swimming lesson.
10 Things you need for your first Adult Swimming Lesson
So, what do you need to bring with you to your first adult swimming lesson? Well, there’s what you need while you’re in the pool, such as swimwear, goggles and a swim hat, as well as what you need before and after you get in the water, including a towel, a locker token, water bottle and perhaps a little snack for after the lesson for replenishing some of the energy you used during the lesson. Keep reading to enjoy the exhaustive list.
Swimwear
Here at Everyone Active, there’s loads of choice over what you can wear to your first adult swimming lesson. We have an extensive swimwear policy that gives you a great guide over what is and isn’t allowed in our pools, but it’s a fairly extensive list, including trunks, swim costumes, swim dresses, bikinis, tankinis, t-shirts and Lycra leggings. Make sure you’re comfortable and can move easily, especially when the material is wet. It’s also important to make sure it’s chlorine resistant. Check out the swimwear policy for the full list.
Swimming Cap
As well as helping to protect your hair from the chlorine in the water, a swimming cap will also help to keep your hair out of your eyes, making the whole experience that little bit easier. Another bonus is that it will help make you a little more slippery through the water, helping you move more effortlessly. If you forget yours before your first adult swimming lesson, swim caps are available for purchase at reception in your local Everyone Active centre.
Goggles
These really are a must for anyone learning to swim. As well as helping to protect your eyes from the chlorine in the water, they will also transform your vision, helping you to see where you’re going and what you’re doing, which is really important. If you forget your pair, Zoggs goggles are available to buy from reception at your Everyone Active centre.
Locker Coin/Token
During your first adult swimming lesson, it’s important to keep your valuables safe. To help you do this, Everyone Active provides lockers in its changing rooms. These are operated using either £1 coins or locker tokens. If you forget to bring either of these with you on the day, a locker token is available to buy from reception in your centre.
Water Bottle
Swimming is some of the best exercise you can do. It burns a huge amount of energy and it’s important you stay hydrated, as you won’t notice how much you sweat in the pool. That’s why you should take a water bottle with you so you can keep your water levels topped up during your first adult swimming lesson.
Snack
As mentioned above, swimming is one of the best exercises you can do for burning calories. It’s a fantastic whole-body workout that works pretty much every muscle in the body, so you’ll chew through those calories during your first adult swimming lesson. That’s why you should bring along a healthy snack such as a banana or some nuts and seeds to enjoy after the lesson to replenish some of that energy and stop you splashing out on some delicious, nutritious and very reasonably priced treats at the café you’ll find at many of our centres. A cup of tea or coffee won’t do you any harm though!
Toiletries
After your first adult swimming lesson, you’ll have loads of chlorine in your hair and on your skin, which can have a drying effect. You can just rinse this off, but sometimes – especially for those with longer hair – you may want to give things a deeper clean to make sure you’ve got it all out.
Hairbrush
Having completed your first adult swimming lesson, you’ll want to look your best and again, for those with longer hair it’s a great way of helping to get rid of the last remnants of chlorine, too.
Towel
Fairly self-explanatory, this one. Without a towel, you’ll be sopping wet after your first adult swimming lesson without any means to dry yourself! You’ll also be cold and you’ll make your clothes wet. It’s just basically not a good situation to be in. If you do forget your towel, however, you will be able to buy one from reception at your Everyone Active centre.
Flip flops or poolside shoes
If you’re concerned about going barefoot or are worried about slipping before your first adult swimming lesson, it might be worth taking a pair of sliders or flip flops with you to wear from the changing rooms to the poolside. These are great for wearing in the shower afterwards as well.
